It's my tradition, more of a habit, I guess, to sit in the still morning of Christmas Eve and listen to the broadcast of Lessons and Carols on the BBC. It's a nice habit.
Human beings are crazy with tradition. We take simple things and make them intricate--our special joy and curse.
My own specialty, music, is rife with the overly intricate. Patterns beneath patterns, on top of harmonic complications. The music of Bach, the busyness of the Baroque, all testaments to humanity's need for pattern, order, and hierarchy.
How refreshing it is when simplicity reigns. But the real joy I feel is in the pull between the poles, the release from complexity and the journey toward more complexity. It's the essence of our lives and our evolution.
